A Downriver couple once heralded as pit bull saviors are now facing charges of creature cruelty.

David McMurtrie, 42, and Kayli Sparks, 29, both of River Rouge, were arrested and arraigned this week, charged in connection with harming 17 dogs that were ill and neglected after Ecorse police investigated an animal complaint in May.

Thursday, McMurtrie's chaser Danielle Cadoret fired back that the accusations are trumped-up, driven by overzealous prosecutors, an out-of-control Television set personality and an angry mob of creature lovers who are beingness misled.

"A lot of people don't know everything that has been going on with the case," Cadoret said. "Because a celebrity is involved, they are angle over backwards to please her, and now, yous've got her writing all these things on Facebook that aren't true."

Cadoret said the defendants and Torres had a big falling-out last yr and the Boob tube host is pressuring prosecutors and stoking public sentiment against them.

Courtroom proceedings scheduled for next month may shed more than light on what happened to the animals and help to decide which of the ii version of events is closer to the truth.

Praised for their deeds

Virtually four years ago, McMurtrie and Sparks were considered heroes in the dog rescue community.

They were hailed for running an independent shelter, Pit Stop For Modify Rescue & Rehabilitation, from their River Rouge domicile that saved dogs considered so vicious they are banned in some communities.

"I haven't seen a rescue group who is as good as they are," said Chadha of Dix Animal Hospital in Lincoln Park. "They continue up with the vaccines, keep up with the heartworm tests. They have saved actually several dogs."

But, the study besides may have foreshadowed problems.

The article said River Rouge regime cited the couple for failing to have a kennel license and for not registering dogs with the city, and the two were struggling financially as they sought back up and donations through a GoFundMe account and grants.

'A trail of death'

The highest-contour supporter they attracted was Torres, the star of the Fauna Planet show that documents the twenty-four hours-to-day activities of the Villalobos Rescue Center in New Orleans.

In 2016, Torres used her glory to aid the two dog-shelter operators raise money that they said they desperately needed at a $fifty-a-ticket event, "It'southward Fur the Dogs!" at Renegades Bar & Grill in Garden Urban center.

"I'm really excited Tia is coming to boondocks," Sparks said in a May 8, 2016, Hometownlife interview. "I tin't wait to see her interact with the dogs and larn what she does and acquire some new training tips."

Role of the reason for the fundraiser, the article said, was to put a down payment on a building that could be licensed as a kennel, which would resolve the ordinance violations for running a shelter out of their home.

Torres — who said on Facebook she and the couple were "similar-minded" when it came to pit bulls — selected McMurtrie and Sparks to be her first apprentices in a new mentoring program that she said she was offering "for selected rescue groups."

At the time, Barkpost — an online blog about "pawesome stuff" — noted that Torres was "the perfect mentor for them" because "Detroit and New Orleans share a lot of similarities with canine overpopulation and a struggling economy."

But, instead of opening a new shelter in metro Detroit, McMurtrie and Sparks ran one that the Goggle box star helped fix for them. The couple moved to New Orleans until their human relationship soured, and last spring they moved back to Michigan.

But, fifty-fifty later on leaving, the discord between Torres and the couple continued.

On Tuesday, Torres blasted her former protegees on her Facebook folio and in television news reports, saying "THE DAY OF RECKONING HAS FINALLY ARRIVED" and that the recent arrests "give us some peace of listen."

"After trying to help them for over a year, they began to hoard dogs which ultimately resulted in u.s.a. attempting to adios them from the location we set up for them in New Orleans," she wrote. "They barricaded themselves in the building and it took the owner of the building quite some fourth dimension to become them out."

Torres added the couple left behind "a trail of death, heartbreak and so much emotional pain for all of usa here." She described the condition of the shelter she set for the couple: "Non only was the building trashed across recognition simply we discovered several dead dogs scattered throughout."

And, Torres said online, McMurtrie and Sparks filed a ceremonious lawsuit against her and the Villalobos Rescue Middle, claiming mental duress, emotional damages and that dogs Torres said were stolen past the couple belonged to them.

Equally of Friday, there were more 2,000 comments on the post mostly from dog-lovers and show fans that generally expressed outrage — and sympathy — for the Telly star and dogs.

The other side

The couple left Louisiana, Cadoret said, because Torres was not all that she seemed.

In her client's judgment, Torres was using distressed dogs — and them — to play the heartstrings of donors. Cadoret said dogs were ill and Torres besides wasn't following proper care procedures, and that's why some of the dogs died.

Cadoret said that as the couple raised questions, Torres was "cut them off."

Finally, last spring, the two had enough. They loaded up air-conditioned trucks with dozens of dogs they had been trying to nurse back to wellness and rehabilitate to bring them dorsum to Michigan.

Cadoret said a 3rd person — David Bowling, 30, of Ecorse, who likewise was arrested and charged with animal cruelty — helped drive one of the trucks of dogs back to Michigan.

In May, Ecorse police checked on a complaint about the dogs.

"Upon arrival, the officers found 17 emaciated and sick dogs in the back of a rental box truck in separate stacked cages, in filth and extreme heat," an update on the case from Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. "Information technology is declared that at least three of the dogs had been stolen from another rescue shelter."

But, Cadoret said, that'due south misleading. The dogs were weak, she said, non as a issue of mistreatment, but because they had been abased and escaped calumniating situations.

McMurtrie — who was charged with two counts of animal cruelty, three counts of receiving and concealing stolen property, and 3 firearm felonies — was being held with bond set up at $50,000. Sparks too was charged with animal cruelty and three counts of theft, and, along with Bowling, had a $25,000 bond.

"They are admittedly determined almost their innocence," Cadoret said of the defendants. "What they honey to do is help dogs, rescue dogs, and that's what they desire to get back to."
