New Stone Roses book in 2012
A new Stone Roses book is due in 2012.
Claiming to be a fully authorised biography of the band might be stretching it a bit as the Roses are not the sort of band who do 'fully authorised biographies' but it looks like an interesting project. Author Simon Spence certainly had the background to pull of a project like this.
It would be good if he could find some new angles after the pretty thorough and best selling books already out on the Stone Roses by LTW! contributor Mick Middles and LTW! boss John Robb.
The book that would be the ultimate Stone Roses book was the rumoured Steve Adge book. Adge was the band's tour manager and at points manager, a brilliant story teller he was an actual insider in the Roses camp and his book would be a brilliant document on the band unless Ian Brown or one of the band decides to do something..,
Rio Ferdinand has been shagging, do we have the 'right to know'?
Now I am not one to defend massively overpaid footballers dripping in watches and money, living life like ball kicking pharaohs in the middle of the worst recession of our lives. Of course everyone should get paid but there is an arrogance of wealth when it is surrounded by poverty and it's making distinctly uncomfortable viewing. From Tevez sitting on his very expensive arse refusing to play whilst picking up stupid money to alleged sex crimes from another unamed professional, sport is full of Lads magazine guffawing style behaviour.
I am also not one to defend their lifestyles, there is a fringe of footballers who behave worse than rock stars, or even worse than some politicians. There's plenty of sex on offer and taken. For me that's their business and if they are married it's between them and their wives and their consciousness. And if they are single then consenting sex with one or more partners of whatever sex they choose is their business as long as it does not affect the way they play. Snorting cocaine and driving those ludicrous looking, far too expensive sports cars too fast is, of course, another matter.
What I don't understand is this tabloid obsession, this we have the right to know, or it's somehow in the public interest if Rio Ferdinand has been caught with very his very expensive pants round his ankles. In your heart of hearts do you really care? It's like gossip gone crazy. People say that footballers are role models and in some respects they are but is the way they live their lives off the pitch anybody's business? They don't set themselves up as role models, they are not religious or political figures who are telling us how to live. If you are taking moral tips from a footballer as a society you are in deep, deep trouble.
What Ferdinand did was not right, clever, honourable, nice or cool but once you have printed it all over the tabloids then maybe it's you who have spread the word about this kind of lifestyle.
I want the right to know why the bankers have screwed up our society, or why we are stuck in loads of wars or why the politicians are doing what they do and so what if Ferdinand was the England captain? I don't give a fuck about leering over who he is shagging. Of course nothing should be ring fenced by lawyers and the polishing of image is not right, along with photo touching images and PR fluff the world is full of bullshit, but who a Footballer is shagging is distracting up from the real stuff, the stuff that we really need the RIGHT TO KNOW.
I retain the right to not care.
Get On Down Records release hiphop jigsaws
Only two days ago we brought you news that Bring Me The Horizon had launched their own BBQ sauce…
Well today we are delighted to bring you the news of hiphop jigsaws.
USA based boutique label Get On Down, who describe themselves as "a collective of music nerds, audiophiles, archivists, old hip hop heads, and creative types", have announced a series of hip hop jigsaws, featuring iconic album covers from the likes of Criminal Minded, Biz Markie and Just-Ice.
Get On Down have teamed up with five legendary record labels to produce these 100 piece puzzles – The full range includes 'Criminal Minded' by Boogie Down Productions, Masta Ace Incorporated's 'Sittin On Chrome', Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's 'Live And Let Die', Just-Ice's 'Back To The Old School', and Biz Markie's 'The Biz Never Sleeps'.
At this stage there is (sadly) little information on release dates, availability "â however you can follow Get On Down via their website.
'The Punk Machine' DVD review (inc Subhumans/Citizen Fish)
Various Artists "ËThe Punk Machine' DVD
Bluurg/Crash Assailant Records/Third Eye Films
Available now.
Yet more evidence that those industrious chaps within the Subhumans/Citizen Fish/Bluurg Records camp fully understand the work ethic"¦
Hot on the heels of the current Citizen Fish "ËGoods' album (LTW review), and numerous pan European festival appearances comes "ËThe Punk Machine' DVD "â essentially a compilation of live video footage from a selection of bands socially and politically aligned to Bluurg etc. However in an effort to lift this from being just another compilation, a humorous storyline has been created that is then interspersed with the live clips.
The gist of the story, played out by various Bluurg camp members being that they are a hapless punk band who after 20 years of trying are on the verge of calling it a day; they agree to a final last gasp effort and during rehearsals are visited by the mysterious impresario Lucifer Spooks who offers to assist them by providing them with "Ëthe punk machine' "â the lads say that they want to sound like Star Fucking Hipsters and Far-Cue "â at this point live clips of both bands follow.
Spooks provides our hopeless trio with "Ëthe punk machine' and tells the lads to anticipate meteoric success; spurred by Joes's belief they activate the machine, which we are taught was created by the evil Dr. Vile (Dick Lucas) – the lads further efforts are as dismal as their first, and they once again play clips of Citizen Fish, Subhumans and Leftover Crack in an effort to show Spooks the bands they wish to emulate "â Spooks encourages them and arranges a showcase gig"¦ during which the true power of "Ëthe punk machine' is revealed "â it's a scam device to rip off punters of their cash, however our hopeless trio have the last laugh for when they tamper with the machine and feed real punk music back to Dr. Vile, it changes his life and he joins the band now called Hi-Fi Insectzs as a singer.
As can be expected this is not a big budget release, its raw live footage interspersed with home recorded film and all produced in "Ëglorious punkoscope' That said it's a neat way of bringing bands to the wider public, bands who would otherwise be shunned.
As the cover declares "ËA thrilling story occasionally interrupted by punk music'
If you are aware of Subhumans/Citizen Fish then you will know what to expect, if not it's your chance to witness some grass roots DIY punk and ska plus clips of luminaries such as A-Heads and Bus Station Loonies.
Available for ã6 (UK P&P inc) from: 37 Faulkland Rd, Bath, BA2 3LT

TV Burp shut down by Simon Cowell?
This is a story that is so ridiculous you would think that someone must have made it up.
Simon Cowell has got Harry Hill to come and write gags for X Factor the musical and Hill's show, TV Burp is no more.
TV Burp was one of those rare moments when the mainstream went wonky, it was surreal, off the wall and clever, it was also funny as fuck and it answered back to the avalanche of TV boredom. Attacking from within Harry Hill was deceptively funny, gentle yet barbed, cuddly yet venomous.
No wonder Simon Cowell has bought him out.
The story is that Cowell has got Harry Hill to be his gag writer on some ego monstrosity called 'X Factor The musical'. Not content with paving the world over in the concrete of the pretend talent show that is all about pumping up his own brand and not the singers, Cowell has moved into the money spinning world of the musical and also perhaps shut down one of the few competitors on Saturday night TV and taken out one of the very few programmes that woke you up from the endless sludge of Cowell TV.
We can put up with Cowell world but like we have said a million times we are bored of him getting 99 per cent of all the media and with this cynical bit of business another tiny speck of resistance has been bought out.
Even last night on the radio I was called a snob for not liking X Factor, but why do I have to pretend ironically that it's, ooooh, wonderful and great? people assume if you are into music that you should like it but it's not a music show, it's a celebrity show, it's selling the Cheryl 'tears as fake as her tan ' Cole brand, it's selling the Simon Cowell brand and no-one is allowed to stand in their way.
The juggernaut owns the media – buying up anything in their path.
Modern media has little to do with musical culture; mainstream TV puffs up the bank balances of the Cowell mafia, local radio is full of dismal nodding dog DJ's and their playlists handed to them on a plate thinking that playing Scouting For Girls is edgy – bigger radio is full of late forties media operatives burned out by years of chemicals chasing the fictional teenage audience.
You get the culture that you deserve: don't blame us just give us a million quid.
